The GI Mentor
Anticipating the needs of tomorrow's surgeons, Hatton established the Minimally Invasive Surgery Training Center (MISTC) in 2002. Currently, the MISTC is equipped with a state-of-the art da Vinci Robotics Surgical System and the Simbionix Gastrointestinal Mentor (GI Mentor), computerized equipment that simulates gastrointestinal procedures.
Simbionix is a recognized leader in computer-assisted endoscopy and laparoscopy training. The company strives to set the standard for minimally invasive surgical training and performance for the 21st century. Its computerized endoscopic and laparoscopic simulators offer numerous advantages in surgical training. First, the simulators provide surgeons with a unique opportunity to learn the skills and coordination required in minimally invasive surgery. Second, a surgeon training on a Simbionix simulator is freed from the concern for patient safety and is able to repeatedly practice a procedure until he or she becomes proficient in its execution. Third, on a simulator, a surgeon can practice difficult procedures at any time, as opposed to conventional surgical training, where such cases may or may not come along during the training stage. And lastly, Simbionix is continually working to develop additional case modules for its simulators, thereby providing an ever-widening collection of procedures for training and practice. Modules are developed in collaboration with leading physicians the world over.
